Re-siding is a home project that you will have to tackle at some point. However, knowing you will eventually have to do it and knowing when to do it are entirely different matters. Timing is key because delaying replacement, intentional or not, could lead to water damage, mold growth, and many other undesirable consequences.
How do you know you need new siding? Valiant Home Remodelers talks about the red flags that indicate that it’s time to change your siding:
1. Cosmetic Imperfection
Nine times out of ten, cosmetic problems are also structural ones. Warping, cracking, fading, and bubbling are common visual signs of damage. If your siding is made from wood, it’s time to change it when there are dark or soft portions. The peeling of paint or wallpaper inside your home could indicate that the exterior siding panels are no longer doing their job to block moisture.
2. Dry Rot
This is a form of wood decay caused by particular fungal species. These microorganisms eat the parts of the wood that make it strong and stiff, rendering the underlying layer of the siding weak. The naked eye doesn’t always see dry rot; you’d have to tap on the surface of the siding to verify its presence. Dry rot–affected areas would sound differently from those that are still intact. Severe dry rot would most likely require replacement.
3. Maintenance Difficulties
Genuine wood offers many upsides, but low maintenance isn’t one of them. It requires periodic repainting to stay impervious to moisture damage. As exterior repainting doesn’t come cheap, maintaining it over time might no longer make financial sense. If you’re tired of applying new coats of paint to your exterior walls, it’s time to switch to vinyl siding to avoid such costs.
4. High Energy Usage
If your utility bills become unnaturally high, bad siding might be at fault. Again, any kind of structural issue might create holes or gaps that would make your siding panels leaky. Without an airtight siding system, your home would demand more energy for cooling or heating to achieve your desired indoor climate.
